The Written Word
Read Write Inc.
We have introduced a new spelling and reading programme called Read Write Inc.
It is aimed at year 5 and 6 pupils to reinforce or learn letter sounds and patterns. The whole ethos is ‘keep up not catch up’ which means the sessions are fast paced and really productive. This programme is aimed at developing phonological knowledge and sound blending.
At the same time it helps to develop:
- spelling
- inference
- deduction
- comprehension skills
- learning and using new vocabulary
- writing longer sentences
- writing in more detail
- building confidence
- reinforcing punctuation
Read Write Inc. Fresh Start
Read Write Inc. Fresh Start has been developed specifically for struggling readers aged 9 to 13.
Fresh Start is a full teaching programme proven to help older readers gain:
- a high reading age (NC level 4) quickly
- access to all areas of the curriculum
- a love of reading.
Simple mnemonics make the alphabetic code easy to learn:
- Pure, exaggerated sounds enable speedy blending and segmenting.
- Age-appropriate phonic texts give children confidence to read
- Discussion and re-reading ensure they gain comprehension and fluency
- Oral rehearsal helps children articulate their ideas in order to write
- Partner practice embeds all learning.
Eight-weekly assessments ensure that every child starts and continues at the right level to make speedy progress.
The structure of the programme ensures that the pupils achieve, which has a positive effect on their self-esteem.
Year 5 start with module 1 and continue through to module 34 in Year 6. The modules cover a range of genres and the difficulty level increases. The modules are of high interest and are accessible to all pupils regardless of reading ability.
We have invested heavily in new resources including reading books, independent writing books, magnetic letters and boards, flashcards, easy-reader reading books and have also created a new reading record which has been designed specifically for this programme in school.
Pupils have undoubtedly made progress using this programme. It works.
Parents are encouraged to assist with homework and reading and are also invited into school to experience a Read Write Inc lesson and partner with their child. It is a great way to learn and consolidate basic skills and we have been delighted with the results so far.
